Considered by many to be the most typical village of the Algarve, Alte is a tiny hamlet of white-washed houses nestling amid trees and hills, a snapshot of the old Algarve. The village dates from Roman times and its Moorish past can be seen in the filigree details of the chimneys that adorn the simple houses. There is a 13th century church, its chapel boasting some very special hand-painted tiles dating from the 16th century. There is an old water mill that dates from the 13th century.
The focal point of Alte are the two springs – Fonte Pequena and Fonte Grande. In times gone by the women of the village would gather here to fill their pitchers and to take care of the laundry. Now the tree-shaded springs are the ideal place to enjoy a relaxing picnic and the tranquillity of this sleepy village. You can find examples of local crafts and produce on sale in Alte, including home-made soaps using local ingredients such as figs, carob, oranges and honey to give the soaps a very unique perfume.
