Located just two minutes walk from the centre of Carvoeiro, A Vela, which is open for dinner only, offers a mixture of traditional cuisine from the Alentejo region of Portugal, and International dishes. The menu also features some dishes that are original creations of owner and chef Paulo. For example, the divine chicken breast served in a fine pastry with banana cream and curry sauce or the duck breast with mango sauce. All the dishes come to your table beautifully presented with great attention to detail.
Specialities at A Vela include Black Pork served with vegetables and a choice of cheesy potatoes or chips and the Suckling Pig roasted in a wood oven, which is only served on Wednesday and Friday. This is extremely popular, so it is advisable to book in advance! The steaks are very good here, particularly served with the Gorgonzola or Roquefort sauce. For dessert, there are plenty of homemade dishes to entice you. Special mention for the delicious homemade Orange Tiramisu, which is a real treat and a house speciality.
At A Vela you can choose to sit outside and make the most of the gorgeous Algarve weather or enjoy the fine interior with seating upstairs or downstairs. The restaurant has a very high vault ceiling, the upper level overlooking the main floor of the restaurant and the high walls decorated with some original artwork. The service at A Vela is first class. Owners Paulo and Antónia are very friendly and welcoming, not to mention multi-lingual - speaking Inglish, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Swiss dialect! Having lived and worked in various parts of the world they bring a cosmopolitan and very professional flavour to the restaurant that mixes perfectly with the warm Portuguese hospitality. A Vela caters very well for groups, with special menus created on request to suit each specific group and budget and aside from the usual menu there are always daily specials available.
